A try square consists of a metal straightedge, often ruled, set at a right angle to a straight piece, and it is used for measuring and marking square work. The head is usually fixed, but not always. A variant of the try square is the double square, which has a sliding head.

The cutting action of the tool occurs where the back of the blade and the bevel intersect. The back of the blade should be flattened and polished, but you only need to do the first inch or so. Work though the series of grits, starting with the coarsest. Keeping the back flat on the abrasive surface, move it back and forth until it is uniformly scratched, and then move to the next grit; this is shown in Figure B. Ideally, the blade should have a mirror finish on the first inch or so by the time you are done, as shown in Figure C.
