Chop out the remainder of the waste with the chisel and mallet. Starting near the centre, the first chisel cuts are made with the chisel inclined at an angle so that, when worked from both directions, the cutting forms a V-shape. As you progress deeper and further back towards the two ends of the mortise, you should gradually bring the chisel up to the vertical. Stop fractionally short of the two squared end lines, because as you prise out waste from the deepest part of the mortise, you will find that the levering action of the chisel makes a dent in the wood.

They are distinguished by a surrounding black mark, and often the centre of the knot is ready to fall out, if it has not already done so. Knots such as this one are hard to avoid in softwoods such as pine. Knotty wood is quite acceptable for garden furniture, and besides, when you give it a thorough application of wood preservative and finish, which often contains a colour, by the time you have finished treating the wood, the knots are hardly noticeable. Even so, you should still be selective when you buy your wood, and only take the best lengths available.
