Another species, H. clausa, is called a triploid because it has 90 chromosomes. Breeding System Since the 19th century, it has been recognized that hybrids may be made between the majority of the species and cultivars of Hosta either by random insect pollinations or through controlled pollinations by breeders. It has also been observed that many hostas set seed regularly even when grown in isolation.

As trees and shrubs mature, every garden becomes shadier, just as gardeners grow older. The great variety of plants that performed so well while the trees were small are "out of their element" in the shade. In fact, relatively few plants perform well in the shade.
