Indeed, hummingbirds (especially the males) can be quite pugnacious and intimidating to other birds no matter how large, in defense of their territory. At one tree in this neighborhood, I saw an Anna’s Hummingbird male chase away a pair of House Finches, a pair of Yellow-rumped Warblers, and even a group of six European Starlings. Hummingbird mating and territorial displays vary widely from species to species. While the Allen’s Hummingbird male zips back and forth in a wide, shallow arc above the female before climbing to about a one hundred foot height and diving down at her with feathers whirring, the Black-chinned Hummingbird male limits his mating display to a series of swoops in a wide, shallow arc above the female (as does the closely related Ruby-throated Hummingbird).
