But in so doing, a Strategy as Practice research agenda would be bound to address praxis. Just how are such routines actually employed and what are the effects of how they are actually employed. We are interested not solely in institutionalized practices in their idealized sense but in the activities, the doing, that explain their role and impact. The structure of the book In the rest of Part I of the book there are two further chapters.

In terms of the interest in practice for which we argue, there is an opportunity to go further. Fundamental to bases of competitive advantage as argued by resourcebased theorists is that the resource characteristics (or capabilities) that lead to competitive advantage are those that are valuable, rare and difficult to imitate. Indeed Barney (1986) has argued that the capabilities most likely to bestow 21 Introducing the Strategy as Practice perspective competitive advantage are those embedded in an organization’s culture, rather than the formalized routines that can be readily discerned by competitors.

All these practices are common across organizations, but there are also specific organizational routines, the ‘repetitive, recognisable patterns of interdependent actions carried out by multiple actors’ (Feldman and Pentland 2003: 95) that come to guide strategy activity in particular organizations. Feldman and Pentland explain such routines in two usefully complementary ways. ‘Ostensive routines’ are ‘the ideal or schematic form of a routine . . the routine in principle’ (101), for example the organization’s project proposal routine or selection routine as it is ‘supposed to happen’.
