And what if my class is all white and doesn’t know about such things either? As Jasbir Mann shows in Chapter 3, the same principles apply, the only difference being that teachers and children will need to go to other sources than themselves and their parents for information; to shopkeepers, cookery books or wherever. The important point is for the teacher to treat all materials as equally valid, equally interesting, equally worthy of study, in the spirit of a genuine desire to explore scientifically.

And yet oracy is crucial for the development of concepts. The teaching of science has experienced changes over the years, and clearly more recent developments have involved a shift from content and retention of facts to looking at processes and developing the skills inherent in these: skills such as researching information, observing, testing out ideas and making hypotheses. This allows pupils the opportunity to undergo an experiential learning process which is activity based. Obviously a major part of this approach involves talk, so that pupils can exchange ideas, have these ideas reinforced or challenged and collaborate in the learning process.

However, for this kind of scientific enquiry based on shared learning and experience to take place, much thought had gone into classroom organisation, pedagogy, organisation of tasks and the needs of the pupils, and this was set within a context which respected and promoted the pupils’ biculturalism and bilingualism. The last decade has seen a gradual process in education of moving from ‘chalk and talk’ to active learning, and through a focus on language across the curriculum we see much more evidence of pupils involved in collaborative work.
