Descriptive, relational, and experimental research can all be directed toward collecting narrative, categorical, or quantitative data.

Often the purpose of the research is to discover the answer to a global question or to contribute to theory construction. This type of research has often been termed “qualitative” (as opposed to “quantitative”), but this terminology confounds the form the data usually take with the nature of the research itself. However, what this book calls flexible method research is what other works call qualitative methods. Flexible method research is designed to provide a deep, rich, “thick” description of the phenomenon under study in context, often involving data that are unstructured or narrative in form.
