A new set of claims around 23 I NTRODUCTION the body, the relationship, and sexuality are in the making. It is part of a new life politics (cf. Giddens 1991), a new politics of difference (Young 1990), and a new politics of discourse (Fraser 1990). There is, of course, absolutely no agreement on what these new politics will be. It is, and will remain, a contested domain. The gay conservatives seem to want to enforce a code of limits: in After the Ball Kirk and Madsen claim that ‘Gay liberation has failed’, proceed to suggest that this is entirely due to the liberation movement being too flamboyant and outrageous, and end with a code of gay ethics which would make a Sunday School teacher happy.

Lesbian scholars have frequently found their strongest affiliations to be with women’s studies programmes, and the gay male academic has either also moved towards these or else, and most commonly, remained in relative isolation. Both women’s studies and black studies have long recognized the advantages and weakness of developing such programmes, and a lesbian and gay studies programme has a lot to learn from such debates. The case against such a study is quite strong. Along with arguments against the dilution of disciplinary studies, there is the real danger that we get hived off into a marginalized, minor academic ghetto where the malestream academic world can simply forget, ignore, or ridicule us.
