In the Spiranthoideae, Neottieae, and Diurideae, the anther is usually firmly attached to a thick filament and it remains in place after the pollinia are removed (Fig. 2-12C, E). In the Orchideae and Diseae, the base of the anther is so completely united with the column that there is no clear boundary between column and anther (Fig. 2-11G).

The division of one population or lineage into two is the usual first step. Geographic isolation is probably the major factor in separating populations, but not necessarily the only type of separation. 2. Speciation.
