Their popularisation of Lenin’s idea that colonialism was the logical extension of capitalism did a great deal to unite Indonesians and mobilise them against Dutch colonial rule. A third stream, more diverse than the first two, was Islam. The most influential Islamic organisations were the modernist Sarekat Islam and Muhammadiyah, which were concerned first of all with promoting the interests of Muslim traders and with cleansing ‘rural’ or traditionalist Islam of its accretions. These organisations were a powerful grassroots force linking together hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of people who looked forward to an independent state based on Islamic principles.

It also helped convince a wider circle of activists of the efficacy of mass action, leading to the formation of the People’s 18 Introduction Democratic Party (PRD) in 1994. Established in defiance of the law, PRD became the main mouthpiece for political radicalism in the late New Order (see Chapter 7). Another sign of the New Order’s waning authority, and of the increasing relevance of mass politics, was Megawati Soekarnoputri’s surprise election as chair of the PDI in 1993. Soeharto always feared Sukarno’s ghost, aware of the reverence Indonesia’s first president continued to inspire among the poor.

Often these arguments were public, as the restrictions on the print media were not as tight as they would later become. The New Order in its early years is best thought of as an alliance between the military and a range of civilian groups that included students, secular intellectuals, professionals, anti-communist party leaders and large numbers of rural and urban Muslims.
