Notice the fullness of the face in thr female compared with the bony, more sculptured male. The face is shorter and wider in the female, and the whole profile is curved, whilst the male's is basically straight. The girl's neck is also less stringy and sinewy, and the bones less sharply defined. Figurer i7a-d Fig 85 shows the modelling of the cheeks in progress. Notice the fuller roundness of them, less hollowing below the cheekbones and the little swelling around the corners of the mouth, Fig 86.
The next operation, rounding the skull, is a fairly simple one. Continue the centre line from the top of the face over the head to the back of the neck, then draw another line from ear to ear across the top of the head. 5 gouge start from the forehead cutting horizontally across the grain of the wood working away from the centre line backwards towards the ears. Try to run the gouge around the curve of the head, modelling- the form you require. Then do the same for the back of the head, working forward, continually looking- down on the head from the top to see the shape you are making (Fig 33).
As you can feel, and see in Fig 53a & b, the hall is suspended in a squarish recess of bone slightly tilted upwards towards the nose. The upper edge overhangs the lower one, and the outside edge curves hack some distance towards the ear, whilst the inner edge is bordered by the bones of the nose. The ball is surrounded by a circle of thin muscle and covered above by the upper lid which opens and closes, Fig 53c & d, and below by the lower lid which tends only to contract and thicken. The shape of the visible eyeball is rather like the segment of an orange.
