Despite the arguments between her parents and with the children, Kathy had never experienced or witnessed violence in childhood. Additionally, she had never experienced violence in relationships prior to Ronald. Ronald and Kathy met in the late spring of 1983, in Colorado. Kathy wanted to do some traveling and then return to the Midwest where she had friends she wanted to visit. Kathy advertised for a rider to help share her expenses for the trip. Ronald answered the ad. Upon meeting, they spent the day and night together.

Kay called Mike because she needed him to take her and the child to the doctor; Mike refused. Kay then called his mother, and she came to pick them up. On the way home from the doctor's office, Mike caught up with them on the road. He motioned his mother to pull over. He stormed out of the car, and Kay knew he was mad. He came up to the car, forced Kay out, and began yelling at her. He threatened to kill her. He demanded that she immediately come home with him. She refused because she feared what he might do to her when they got home.

Three months prior to our initial interview, he began working two jobs. In our last interview, he indicated that he had been promoted in his department store job and was going to be receiving a full-time position. He planned to quit his other job. Mike came from a small family and had only one younger brother. His father had died when he was very young; he had been raised by a stepfather, who had died in 1978. Soon after I met with Mike, he discovered that his stepfather was not his real father and began to understand a bit more about their relationship during his childhood.
