I know next to nothing about scraping because it doesn’t appear to have much use in the turning of the kinds of parts my chairs require (although I should confess that in the past I have used my cutting tools to scrape out shapes I didn’t know how to produce using a cutting action).

The frequent use of tapers is one of the hallmarks of turned Shaker parts. Rungs often taper from a thick middle to small shoulders adjacent to the tenons on both ends of the rung. The bottoms of both front and back posts taper along their bottom-most sections, and back posts typically taper upward from just above the seat rung to the finial at the top of the post. Fortunately, tapers are the easiest elements in my vocabulary to create. I form them with my roughing gouge by taking more and heavier passes from those sections of a part that will end up with the smallest diameter.

When a turning is under stress, particularly when you’re knocking the corners off of a new part you just installed in your lathe, sometimes the point of the tailstock center will begin to enlarge the depression that the point has made in the part’s end grain. If that has happened, no amount of rasp work or light passes or anything else will reduce the chatter until you’ve gotten the tailstock center re-established. indd 47 3/18/08 1:18:42 PM 5 Making Arms S ome of the chairs I build are straight-forward reproductions of Shaker, Arts & Crafts and country originals.
