Yet all orthodox Christians, whether Protestant or Catholic, believe that the atonement was, in some sense, conditional, at least for adults, and that some humans, but not all, will receive salvation. Those without God's grace or Page xii mercy will suffer some form of damnation, either eternal separation from God or some form of torment. It was around these doctrines that the deepest fissures entered the story of Western Christianity. The major Reformers Luther, Zwengli, Bucer, Calvin, Cranmer, and Knox all believed that the condition that rendered the Christ's atonement efficacious was faith, by which they meant belief, trust, and love.

Its history is enormously complex, for almost none of the characteristics of the very first independent congregations survived until the gradual union of half or more of these Christians in the West with the Disciples of Christ after 1832.
