Mox Nox by Joan Cornella, Fantagraphics (July): Published in Spanish in 2013, Cornella's comics are largely wordless, so translation isn't really the issue, as much as getting his work into the sphere of a wider audience and into book stores. Jacobs devotes many pages to silent moments showing the mysterious flora and fauna of this dangerous but beautiful wilderness, drawing attention to his skill for designing unsettling creatures and bizarre locales.

This is the one where Batman kicks Superman's ass. Set a decade after Batman's retirement, The Dark Knight Returns offers a grim vision of the future of Gotham City. Times are bleak and Gotham is in need of a hero Madness of Wonderland (Grimm Fairy Tales Presents...). I'm agog at the range of drawing and conceptual imagery the artists have. There's a lot of pure entertainment just in that fine detail in this series. The characters are not only well defined in drawing but they also come alive with their vocabulary. Writer, Paul Tobin knows just the right thing to have them say to keep our interest whetted. Pictures alone cannot do this...can't tell an absorbing dystopian story of this kind without the development of characters and relationships Angel #4. McNinja" and eventually snagging a publishing deal with Dark Horse. The concept dreamed up by a 5-year-old and drawn into life by a 29-year-old is so simple but so gobsmackingly hilarious and outrageous with its sudden twists and turns that it deserves to be mentioned in the same sentence as "The Tick" and "Flaming Carrot Comics." Alan Moore's "Top Ten," for instance, is a wonderfully written set of interwoven stories about a police station in a city where everyone has a superpower of some kind. More than "cool," it's surprisingly emotional stuff that should appeal to anyone who likes clever ensemble adventure stories like "Deadwood." Vaughan and Fiona Staples sci-fi epic adventure, Saga, has not only become one of the bestselling and most critically acclaimed comic series since its debut in March 2012, but it has also become one of the most controversial comics The Adventures of Red Sonja #10. Some may be collections of comic books published serially, but containing just one story arc, while others are sequential novels, à la Charles Dickens The Forgotten Planet (Large Print). Mouse Guard is gorgeously illustrated and follows various mice (who are members of the guard) through various medieval-style adventures as they protect the realm and their queen from dangers within and without.
