Where did the term 'Evangelical' come from and how is it distinct from 'Protestant'. As in Orthodoxy, the Priest invokes the Holy Spirit during the Mass. Evangelicals may be strict about doctrine, but the actual content of doctrine isn't tremendously distinctive from 'ordinary' Protestant beliefs, with the exceptions of (1) a stronger view of Biblical authority than many others have, and (2) a related commitment to 'pure' or 'mere' Christianity 5.

Critics accuse Charismatics of interpreting scripture subjectively and according to human whim – in contrast with a methodology in which grammatical and historical context serve as the interpretation construct. Critics accuse Charismatics of subscribing to the teachings of a “Prosperity Gospel” – the belief that blessings, money, and health are promised rewards for faith in Jesus Sent to Heal (A Handbook on Christian Healing). Jesus is the only one who ever did that--there is no miracle that really superceded that. But, the disciples works were greater in scope and effect. They took the gospel to the ends of the earth, according to Acts 13:47 Counterfeit Revival. If you doubt it, I invite you to try to offer statistical evidence to refute it. But back to Michael Brown, like all honest Charismatics, he freely acknowledges that the Charismatic Movement has indeed spawned an overabundance of charlatans, and phonies, and heretics and crackpots The Ultimate Road Trip: 12 Journeys that Shape Your Future.

At a time when most denominations affirmed cessationism (the belief that spiritual gifts had ceased), Pentecostals held that the gifts of the Holy Spirit were being restored to the Christian church. [5] The distinctive doctrine of Pentecostalism is that there is a second work of grace after conversion, which Pentecostals call the baptism in the Holy Spirit, that is evidenced by glossolalia (“speaking in tongues”). In 1906 tongues were spoken on Azusa Street in Los Angeles, California, and out of these two events in 1901 and 1906 grew the mainline Pentecostal denominations which are still with us today (Assemblies of God, etc.).
